North America, United States
Half Dome at Yosemite National Park is probably the most recognisible rock formation in the national park. The cliff is an astonishing 5,000 feet above Yosemite Valley and 8,800 feet above sea level. It is also only 7 degrees from being vertical, making it America’s sheerest cliff face.
For the brave and adventurous the Half Dome can be climbed. However, if this is not your cup of tea, you can also hike the 16-mile round trip to the summit, which can be accomplished in roughly12 hours.
Due to safety reasons people wanting to do the hike need to get a permit in advance. This helps control numbers, meaning that the trail is limited to 300 hikers a day. If you want more information on how to get permits and advice on doing the hike click on the link, which will take you to the National Park Service website.
