  • The Golden Gate Bridge is the most famous landmark in San Francisco and one of the most recognised landmarks in the entire world. Many will have seen the Golden Gate Bridge on their bucket list but why not take it one step further and cycle across it?

There are many companies offering guided bike tours across the bridge, which is a good option if you want to learn about the city as you cycle. Should you want the freedom to explore independently, however, it is easy (and cheaper) to simply rent a bike and do it yourself.

There are various routes through the city and on to the bridge and the choice is really yours. However, one recommended route is to start at Fisherman’s Wharf, as this makes for an efficient trip whereby you cycle from Fisherman’s Wharf, see some of the city before crossing the bridge to Sausalito and then return to Fisherman’s Wharf by ferry. There are a number of bike rental companies in at the Wharf all of which will provide you with helmets, bike locks and maps, as well as a bike of your choice.

Before you even reach the bridge you will see some great sights, including the Great Meadow, the Palace of Fine Arts and views of Alcatraz! Going alone means you can hop off your bike whenever you see something that interests you and there is no doubt that this will be a frequent occurrence on this ride!

When you reach the bridge you will ride on the west sidewalk if it is a weekend or the east sidewalk if it is a weekday. The views of the city are better from the east sidewalk so go on a weekday if you can. Follow your map over the bridge and on to Sausalito where the Blue and Gold ferry will take you back to Fisherman’s Wharf. If you are travelling during peak season head straight to the ferry dock and buy your ticket as there can be a sixty minute wait during busy times.

The ferry journey is a great opportunity to enjoy the views for a little longer and to take some more photos of these wonderful sights before finally heading back to the shore and returning your bike.
