  • The Tidal Basin is a man-made inlet in Washington D.C. and is a fantastic place from which to enjoy some of the city’s most impressive memorials. Head there when the weather is warm to hire a paddle boat and enjoy the memorials from the water. Boats can hold two or four people and are available from May to October.

There are five memorials sitting on the banks of the inlet including the famous Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Franklin Roosevelt Memorial and Martin Luther King Memorial. The other two memorials are somewhat lesser known: George Mason Memorial and John Paul Jones Memorial. George Mason was an eighteenth-century statesman from Virginia who is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the United States. John Paul Jones was an American Naval Hero who battled during the American War of Independence.

Of the five memorials the one dedicated to Thomas Jefferson is undoubtedly the most impressive. It is a gleaming white, circular dome which was deliberately built to resemble architecture from Ancient Greece – the birthplace of democracy as Jefferson was a strong believer in the principles of liberty and freedom.

Early April is the most beautiful time to visit the Tidal Basin as it is then that the thousands of cherry trees that surround the Tidal Basin begin to blossom. At this time the National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place and visitors can enjoy a number of varied activities from concerts to tree lectures to art exhibitions. All activities have a slight Japanese twist in reference to the trees having been a gift to the US from Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki in 1912.

During this time the area can become quite busy. If you struggle to get a paddle boat, or simply would prefer not to, then why not take a walk around the Tidal Basin instead and enjoy the memorials and trees from the land.
