  • Widely known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, Pine Creek is a 75 kilometre long gorge which has been carved into the landscape over the past 350 million years.

The gorge has a depth of 427 metres at its deepest point and is surrounded by hundreds of thousands of acres of Pennsylvania state forest and parkland. At the northern end of the gorge are two state parks: Colton Point State Park to the west and Leonard Harrison State Park to the east. Within both of these parks are a number of hiking trails and observation points which enable visitors to enjoy magnificent views over the canyon and of the surrounding scenery. For the more adventurous it is also possible to hike down actually into the canyon itself. Those keen to take on a real challenge could consider taking on the Pine Creek Trail which extends for 68 kilometres taking visitors through both state parks.

As well as hiking, Pine Creek Gorge is also a fantastic location for cycling and bird watching on land and canoeing, fishing, swimming and rafting on the river. These activities are widely available during spring and summer but if you are heading to Pine Creek Gorge specifically for the scenery then we recommend waiting until autumn. During this season the leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange, red and purple and are a truly spectacular sight.

Visitors to Pine Creek Gorge have a decent choice of accommodation. They can camp in either of the state parks or, if they are nearer the southern end of the gorge, can choose from a number of bed and breakfasts. Also offering accommodation, and worth a visit in its own right, is the charming and historical town of Wellsboro which is known for its Victorian architecture and gas-lit street lamps. Wellsboro is approximately a half hour drive from the state parks.
