  • Located in the east of Texas, Caddo Lake State Park is named for the enormous and beautiful lake it encompasses. Caddo Lake covers an incredible area of 26,800 acres and is the largest natural lake in the southern part of the United States as well as being the only natural lake of any significant size in Texas.

Much of Caddo Lake is covered with lush vegetation meaning that the lake is essentially a maze of different swamps, bayous and ponds. With over 70 species of fish thought to inhabit here, Caddo Lake is an angler’s paradise and it is no wonder that fishing is one of the park’s most popular activities.

Caddo State Park is also a great place for nature and wildlife lovers. Interesting flora and fauna within the park includes cypress trees, American lotus, and lily pads and it is also home to a range of birds and animals including alligators, waterfowl, turtles, white-tailed deer, raccoons and armadillos amongst others. The park has a number of different hiking trails which enable visitors to enjoy its diverse nature. Arguably a more popular option, however, is to rent one of the canoes which are available year round and to explore the park from the water!

The park headquarters are an excellent place to learn more about the extremely colourful history of this area. They provide information and tales about Caddo Indians, pearl hunting, Prohibition, the Great Depression and much more! The park hosts a number of educational events throughout the year – be sure to check their website before visiting to discover what is available at the time of your stay.

Visitors can stay within the park and the charming cabins built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps are always a popular choice. These cabins sleep up to six people and are very reasonably priced. Another, even cheaper, option is to camp at one of the park’s campsites.
